Bane is one of the main villains of Gotham City. He first appeared in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1, 1993).

Background[]

A Cuban-born Christian, Bane was the son of criminal Edmund Dorrance. He was forced to serve his father's life sentence.

Born in Santa Prisca, in Cuba, in the prison known as Pena Duro, Bane was treated unfairly, and his mother died when he was 6. He built up his strength every day, and worked in the gym.

One day, fleeing an island in between Jamaica and Cuba, a group of criminals came to Pena Duro, to gain information about the prison. One of the criminals took Osito, 8-year-old Bane's teddy bear, and tossed it over the edge of a railing. He then shoved Bane over the railing when he refused to give them information. Falling many stories, he came back procuring a shiv, and stabbing the leader, El Puerco, to death when he said that he didn't want Bane to work for him anymore.

Life in Gotham[]

Bane was given many tests for Venom, a type of drug. He had to feed the signals to his brain. Should he fail to do so, he would suffer severe blackouts. One day, he willed his vital signs way below where their machines couldn't find them. After faking his death, he escaped in the belly of a Tiburon (shark) and he went to Gotham City, in New Jersey. Thinking that Batman was the bat that haunted his dreams, he chased after him.

Breaking all of the criminals out of Arkham Asylum, Bane went to Wayne Manor. With enough time to deduce that Bruce Wayne was Batman, he broke Batman's back. Robin posed as Batman and severed the Venom tubes, bringing him to Blackgate Prison, while Bruce wayne recovered and learned to walk again.

In media[]

He was played by Jeep Swenson in the 1997 film, Batman & Robin, and by Tom Hardy in the 2012 film, The Dark Knight Rises.
